Martin has played bowls for many years, one of his first successes being selection for an Under 25 international indoor trial in 1990.

Success quickly followed outdoors when he won the Hertfordshire County and Eastern Counties Fours competitions in 1992, and reached the semi-final of the National Fours competition in the same year.

In the last 15 years Martin has reached the final stages of many competitions, the high point being runner up in the National Singles in 1997.  He participated in outdoor National trials in 1998 and 1999, and has represented Hertfordshire at the National finals at Worthing on many occasions including Fours (1992, 1996), Triples (1993, 2000 & 2005), Pairs (1996 & 1998), and the Singles (1997, 2005).

2006 saw Martin qualify for 2 National Indoor finals - with Carol Brown in the Mixed Pairs where they reached the quarter-final, and with son Bradley in the Father and Son competition, where they reached the last 16.
